This section outlines the mold and health issues that I had while living at The Murray Apartments in Summerville South Carolina including:
I grew up in Summerville and was excited to be a part of the Nexton experience when I moved into the Murray Apartments In early 2022. I had to wait for construction to finish on the 400 building before moving in to unit 4422. During the Spring I started having health issue that i have never experienced before and started seeing my family doctor and specialist at MUSC. but no one could pinpoint the cause of my issues. I underwent a series of tests including a CT scan, MRI, allergy test, and a breathing test of which came back as negative for allergies or any lung disease. During this time I discovered mold around all of my air conditioning vents which posed a problem because I have been taking biologic injections for over 20 years that significantly lowers my immune system.
I hired an environmental company to come out and analyze the apartment to determine the extent of the mold issues. After viewing the pictures sent to the company when booking the appoint the technician would not enter the apartment without wearing a full body suit with breathing machine. The technician took multiple samples and sent them off to be professionally analyzed. The very next day, I assume after seeing the technician put on the full body suit in the parking lot, the Murray sent out an email informing that there would be an inspection in the 400 building. I replied to the email informing them that mold was found in my apartment and that I was having health issues that could be from the mold exposure. The samples were sent to a certified lab and the results were astonishing. I was told that a normal count was around 600 and anything over 1200 was a sign of issues. My count was 1,5000,000 so I gave copies to my family doctor and specialist at MUSC and was advised to vacate the apartment as soon as possible.
After learning this I went to the corporate office in downtown Charleston to speak with someone from upper management to resolve the issue. I was told no one was there but was contacted via email by two members of upper management (see emails). After trying to meet with one of the members (see emails) I was eventually told that I had to speak to their attorney and would no longer be able to meet with them (see emails). After informing their attorneys that I had medical bills, cost of the environmental report, and having to discard most of my belonging due to the mold I asked them how they were going to help. Their reply was they would give me extra time to move out with zero compensation for my belongings or anything else if I signed a release that I could never sue them for health issues, I could never tell anyone about the mold issues or ever say anything bad about The Murray. They also stated the mold was "alleged" to be in the apartment so they denied any mold ever existed even after their employees spent days in my apartment removing drywall with mold on it (see pictures).
